Mayim and Shamayim מים שׁמים A long time ago, while sailing through the Mediterranean on a cargo ship with my father a Jewish member of the crew pointed out to me the special relationship between water and sky in Hebrew. Mayim (מים -waters) and shamayim (שׁמים - skies). One contained in the other, one related to the other, a union so strong that it is reflected on the surface of earth by a spectacle of light, and locked in the language. Water on earth, water in the heavens: a double act in fifteen photographs.
