Stills from archival, silent films from 1946, video projection with sound
These film stills capture post-war reunions of individuals who crossed the Atlantic Ocean to be reunited with loved ones. Each frame preserves a moment of extraordinary emotion: connection, relief, and joy after years of separation, loss and worry.

The artist was drawn to the fragile gestures of embrace and recognition found in archival footage entitled Refugees Arrive at Ellis Island (1946), held by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The footage shows Europeans arriving in New York City, some of them survivors of concentration camps. Paused and re-framed, these fleeting moments become acts of remembrance, bearing witness to the endurance of human connection and photography’s capacity to hold memory, presence and emotion within a single image.
The stills are accompanied by a projected video created by the artist, where the movement of sea and human figures suggests the passage of time and the crossing of distance. A musical piece, Baby Lullaby by Alexander Blu, weaves through the work, echoing themes of care, return and tenderness.
