This chapbook brings together a selection of writings by Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska (1872–1925) for the first time, drawing on previously unpublished and newly translated manuscripts of poetry and prose. It was commissioned by Kettle's Yard to mark the centenary of Sophie's death, and gives English-language readers direct access to a voice long overshadowed by that of her partner, the sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891–1915), whose drawings illustrate the volume.
The anthology grew out of a collaboration between three women. The project was initiated by Dr Inga Fraser, Senior Curator at Kettle's Yard, who also designed the publication and selected the accompanying artworks. Dr Patricia Gillies contributed translations of Sophie's French poems. Ania Ready translated excerpts from Sophie's Polish short stories and wrote the introduction and a critical summary of her work, drawing on the research first developed for her photobook I Also Fight Windmills.
The anthology's publication coincided with Another Chance Encounter, Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska's exhibition at Kettle's Yard, which included a new work responding to Sophie's correspondence and multilingual identity, developed in dialogue with the exhibition's curator, Professor Amy Tobin. The anthology was launched with a public event at Kettle's Yard.
